This project was developed for a typography course. The assignment required designing a full book jacket (front, back, and spine) for the novel “One Hundred Years of Solitude” by Gabriel García Márquez.

I used a deep, forest-green background and the typography is applied in 3 distinct ways

  • Decorative vine patterns: The swirling motifs at the top of the cover are the characters from the Glowbetter typeface intertwined.

  • Symbolic Imagery: The house icon (which is a central symbol of the Buendía home) is made using characters from the font as well.

  • Hierarchical layout: The title, Cien Años de Soledad, uses a bold, stylized weight of Glowbetter to create both a readable title and the structure for the house icon. The back cover features a legible block of text describing the novel’s themes of magical realism. The spine maintains the consistency of the front cover so the book is easily identified on shelves.

The design represents the dense and magical nature of the Buendía family legacy using the typeface: Glowbetter. By restricting the design only to typographic elements, the goal was to create illustrative forms without relying on external photography or traditional drawings.
